As a parent of two children who were part of BYSO for a combined 10 years I must say that based on my experience I now believe that this organization cares primarily about filling the seats with players than about the health and growth of our precious children. BYSO needs a thorough outside, independent evaluation of its processes and must ensure that children are not psychologically harmed by their practices. If your children enjoy playing an instrument then please think carefully before you send them to this organization. I can provide more details off-line if you are interested.
Great place
I play viola over at BYSO and I feel that there are a few things the organization can work on. In the practices, the teachers will take out their frustration on all the children. They use demeaning language. I understand you would be frustrated if they weren't getting it, but they're the students, and you're the teacher. Encourage them to get better, not scare them into practicing four hours a day just so they won't get yelled at. BYSO also doesn't ask for any feedback. (My mother has given it without them asking, but I don't think they gave any attention to it.) Not everything was bad, though. Once you get up on stage to preform, it is quite fun and exciting. You do learn a lot, you really do. I have to give them credit for that, but I do hope they put a little less pressure on the students. It will still sound just as good!
