Sadly, this was my only bad business experience in Boston. I traveled all the way from Georgia to Boston, so I booked my cruise ticket to go to Salem a few days in advance when the weather was supposed to be 70 and sunny. However, the remnants of hurricane Nate came through Boston that day instead. As soon as I found out, I asked if I could cancel or change the time, and said it's non-refundable, non-exchangeable, and they go out "rain or shine". I'm sure it's stated on the website, but you'd think there would be a little bit of consideration regarding the weather. It's nice they still operate, but this is my vacation. Obviously, I don't want to use what little time I have here, spending 2 hours on a boat and 6 hours walking around a town during a tropical depression. So I lost $70 to them (round trip, plus Salem trolley) for being proactive and booking in advance. My advice... Don't book in advance. Wait to see what the weather does. Or just take an Uber up to Salem. It's actually about the same price as one person boat ticket.
An added bonus is that the tour is near the flightpath for Boston Logan airport so you'll often see planes taking off overhead (particularly on the return leg).
The tour is extensive and gives great information on Boston harbour and how it's history also reflects on the history of the City itself. It shows how industries come and go and what seemed permanent can disappear. Some interesting anecdotes were retailed along with a dash of drama.
We had a great Historical tour on Oct 15, 2017 where we got a lot of interesting Boston and US information. BHC even changed our tickets on the day from Monday to Sunday. Great service! The length of the tour 90 minutes was perfect.
We went in Mid-November and felt like we almost had the boat all to ourselves. The commentary was interesting but didn’t have too much to say about the early times in Boston. Lots of info about the 20th Century. Gorgeous views.
Took the 90 minute harbour tour. It's not inexpensive but overall it was worth it. The commentary is live rather than recorded and that added quality. The boat itself is in good condition though the lower (enclosed) deck area did have a whiff of fuel and general stuffiness.
I went on the winter and had great fun. The staff it's great and you can take some amazing pictures in the top of the cruise.
If your looking for a place to learn a little about the history of the city in a fun and dynamic way then this is the right place for you.
